MENOMONIE -- A Menomonie man who compiled more than 4,000 images and videos of child pornography on his computer in April was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison and 10 years on extended supervision.
Michael L. Jaenke, 1720 Eighth St., pleaded no contest in Dunn County Court to a felony charge of possession of child pornography after waiving his preliminary hearing. Judge Rod Smeltzer accepted the plea and handed down the sentence.
Smeltzer said a prison term was needed to protect children.
"These kids are being marked for their whole lives for what they get subjected to," Smeltzer said. "It's a cancer out there."
Smeltzer ordered Jaenke to pay $768 in court costs and a surcharge for possession of pornography. He also ordered Smeltzer to register as a sex offender and prohibited him from having unsupervised contact with minors.
This isn't Jaenke's first brush with the law. He was convicted in 2006 in Adams County for possession of child pornography.
In 1993, Jaenke was convicted of first-degree sexual assault of a child in Eau Claire County.
Jaenke's attorney, Peter Morin, said Jaenke pleaded no contest to avoid having charges filed against him in federal court.
"He realized he did something wrong and he has to pay a penalty," Morin said.
According to the criminal complaint:
Menomonie police and the state Division of Criminal Investigation searched Jaenke's residence April 9 and found many pornographic images of boys.
When questioned by a DCI investigator, Jaenke admitted to viewing the images. He said he had viewed pornographic images and videos for the past couple of years.
Jaenke told the investigator he had about 4,000 images and videos on one of his computers and he was interested in boys ages 14 to 18, but had viewed images of younger boys. He told authorities he uses child pornography to keep himself from sexually assaulting children.
