Season ends for Reds

La Crosse advanced to state with 5-4 win over Hudson

The season came to an end for the Superior Reds Friday afternoon with an 11-1 seven-inning loss to Chippewa Falls in the American Legion Regional Tournament, which is taking place at Casper Park in Chippewa Falls.

The Reds managed four hits, singles by Trent Olson, Taylor Olson, Sam Schiff and Clayton Yeazle.

Superior’s run came in the bottom of the first inning. After Chippewa Falls scored three times in the top of the first, Superior loaded the bases as Trent Olson walked and Taylor Olson and Yeazle singled. Trent Olson then scored on a wild pitch.

Nik Mattson suffered the loss for the Reds, allowing 10 hits with one strikeout and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. Tyler Long, Dylan Ramage and Yeazle pitched the remaining 1 ½ innings.

Louie Hebert was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Tyler Duex pitched a perfect seventh inning to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Chippewa Falls had 12 hits, four by Drew Steinmetz, three by Duex and two by Tony Blair.

The Reds fell to La Crosse 7-1 Thursday in the opening round of American Legion Regional Tournament play in Chippewa Falls.

Superior finished the game with just a pair of hits. Both came in the first inning, as Taylor Olson doubled and Ramage singled. Schiff then walked to load the bases, but La Crosse pitcher Ben Faga struck out the next two batters to end the threat.

The Reds loaded the bases twice more — in the eighth and ninth innings — but failed to score either time.

Superior’s lone run came in the bottom of the second. Nik Matson reached on an error, advanced to second on Jordan Hughes’ groundout and then scored when Zach Magdzas was caught in a rundown.

La Crosse scored single runs in the second, fifth and eighth innings before putting the game away with four runs in the ninth inning.

Mike Kelley led La Crosse at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Faga was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Brandyn Baum was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Faga also earned the pitching win for La Crosse, throwing 7 2/3 innings. He gave up two hits and four walks while striking out seven.

Ryan Myhre took the loss for Superior, giving up five runs on nine hits in 8 1/3 innings while walking two and striking out nine.

Superior will be back in action at 1 p.m. Friday. The Reds will face defending state champion Chippewa Falls, a 12-6 loser to Hudson on Thursday.

The final game of the day saw La Crosse, ranked No. 3 in the state, defeat Eau Claire 5-4.
