Showalter wins sixth Nemadji Invitational golf championship
Hanson wins first flight with 79; Olson wins 2nd straight senior titleBy: Ken Olson, Superior Telegram
For the past 10 years it’s been either Deb Showalter or Norma O’Leary finishing first at the Nemadji Women’s Invitational at the Nemadji Golf Course.
It was no different Wednesday afternoon as Showalter returned to the top after carding a 78 to claim her sixth championship at Nemadji.
Showalter also won titles in 2004, 2006 and 2009. She won her first two Nemadji title as Deb Stocke in 1989 and 1998.
O’Leary finished second with an 82 and Amy Patenaude and Trish Glanville tied for fourth place with 83s.
O’Leary has won nine Nemadji titles, 1995, 2000, 2002-03, 2005, 2007-08 and 2010-11.
The last time someone other than O’Leary or Showalter won the Nemadji Women’s Invitational was when Kelly Steen won in 2001.
Peggy Hanson carded a 79 to win the first flight. Maureen DeRosier, Hayley Botten and Deb Mayhew tied for second with 83s.
Terrie Storlie won the second flight, V. Haley won the third flight, S. Fogo won the fourth flight, and C. Seitz won the fifth flight.
Barb Olson won her second straight senior division championship with an 82.
Other senior flight winners were Mary Meirotto, C. Germann, J. Walker, E. Jensen and J. Walker.
This year’s tournament had 83 women signed up to golf on Tuesday, up from 69 last year. The event only lost 10 golfers after a rain storm moved through the area early Wednesday morning.
DIVOTS: The senior division was renamed the Nemadji Women’s Golf Club Renna Rychlak Memorial Tournament. … A new tee box dedicated to Rychlak on the No. 12 hole of the North-South course was used for the first time Wednesday. … A portion of the proceeds from the Nemadji Women’s Invitational goes to support the SHS girls golf team. … Joan Richardson who has won the senior title eight times and the regular title in 1992, was among a number of golfers from the Iron Range who withdrew from the tournament because of rain. … Anne Tracy, who golfed in the 1st Flight, was stung by a bee early in her round.
