Record numbers turn out for mini-track meet opener

The Superior Mini-Track and Cross Country series got off to a roaring start Tuesday as a record crowd turned up to run at the outdoor track behind Wessman Arena.

“We had the largest turnout in the history of the mini-meet on Tuesday night,” said Dan Conway, meet organizer and head coach of the Superior High School cross country team. “A good time was had by all.”

Runners ranged in age from 3 to 73 with about 60 people total showing up for the event.

“The Superior YMCA running club and their leader Kyle Hanson showed up with 20 boys and girls ages 7 to 15,” Conway said. “Also making an appearance was Eve Stein with her adult running group of beginning runners, mostly ladies. Top that off with several high school, adult and masters runners and the number is around 60.”

The largest group of runners competed in the 100 meters, with 35 entrants. The youngest runners went first in groups of six, followed by the adult runners. Jette Leopold, 3, was the youngest to run in the race, Conway said.

The second meet in the Mini-Track and Cross Country series will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 24. Cost is 50 cents and there is no pre-registration.
