Long's RBI double gives Reds 7-6 win over Chetek in title game
Tyler Long’s RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Superior Reds a 7-6 win over Chetek in the championship game of the Superior Reds/Blues American Legion Tournament Sunday afternoon at Morrie Arnovich Field.
Clayton Yeazle singled with two outs and then scored on Long’s double to the left-centerfield gap as the Reds completed a perfect weekend with a 3-0 record.
During pool play the Reds defeated Virginia 5-4 in 8 innings and the West Duluth Cubs 11-2.
Long was also the complete-game winning pitcher, allowing eight hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
For the Reds, Taylor Olson was 3-for-4 with four RBIs, including a RBI double and two-run single.
Trent Olson and Jordan Hughes each added a triple and single, Sam Schiff and Long had RBI doubles, Ryan Myhre doubled, Yeazle singled and Zach Magdzas had a sac fly for an RBI.
Max Reisner had three hits for Chetek.
The Reds resumed regular-season play Monday with a 3-1 loss at Hermantown.
Nik Mattson suffered the complete-game loss.
Ryan Myhre scored Superior’s run when he doubled and eventually scored on Zach Magdzas’ squeeze bunt. Spencer Koskie and Colton led the Reds with two hits apiece.
Superior hosts the West Duluth Cubs for a doubleheader at 6 p.m. Tuesday and Moose Lake for a single game at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Reds 11, Cubs 2
Superior’s Myhre was the complete-game winning pitcher with six strikeouts against West Duluth.
Travis Samuelson hit a two-run home run for the Cubs in the fourth inning.
Myhre also led the Reds at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs.
The Reds scored two runs in the first inning, five times in the fourth inning, three times in the fifth and once in the sixth.
Reds 5, Virginia 4
Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Dan Pellinen singled and scored on Jeremy Pashcke’s single.
The Reds tied it up in the second when Koskie was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Long’s ground out.
The Reds took a 4-3 lead in the fifth when Trent Olson hit a two-run double and Taylor Olson followed with a RBI double.
Mattson scored Superior’s winning run when he led off the bottom of the eighth inning, moved up on Yepma’s sac bunt and eventually scored on Koskie’s sac fly.
Yeazle was the complete-game winner, allowing one run in the first inning, two in the third and one more in the sixth.
Blues 8, Moose Lake 6
Payton Flanders singled three times and scored a run in the Blues’ win over Moose Lake.
Sean O’Neill was also 2-for-3, Dan Sislo doubled, and Jake Libal, Bo Higgins and Tyler Eisenhower singled.
Chetek 12, Blues 0
Blues lead-off batter Andy Glonek reached base, advanced to third but failed to score. After that, Superior failed to get a runner past first base as Chetek rolled to a five-inning win.
O’Neil had two hits for the Blues.
Cubs 6, Blues 4
West Duluth got a double and single from Josh Davis in its win over the Blues in the third-place game.
Colton Yeazle, a member of the Reds who was playing for the short-handed Cubs, provided the winning runs with a two-run single in the top of the eighth inning.
For the Blues, Taavi Mattson double; Libal singled twice; and Emerson Minter, Erik Anderson and Glonek singled.
