Reds wrap up play in Lakeview Classic with loss to Lakeville North

The Superior Reds wrapped up play in the Duluth Lakeview Classic American Legion baseball tournament with a 9-4 loss to Lakeville North in the consolation semifinals Sunday morning at Morrie Arnovich Field.

The Reds, who were the only local team to advance out of pool play to the championship tournament, went 2-3 on the weekend. Superior defeated Proctor and Thunder Bay and lost to Chester Bird twice and Lakeville North.

The Reds are off until hosting the Superior Reds/Blues Tournament Friday-Sunday at Morrie Arnovich Field. The Reds open against Virginia Friday night.

NOTES: Lakeville North went on to defeat East Ridge in the consolation championship. Bloomington won the Classic championship with a 4-3 win over Wayzata. Fridley won the third-place game 14-11 over Chester Bird. … Chester Bird American Legion Post 523 is composed of players from the Benilde-St. Margaret’s School. … This year’s Classic included 20 teams, up from 16 last year with Duluth East’s Ordean Field was unplayable. …

Lakeville North 9, Reds 4

The Reds held leads of 2-0 after two innings and 4-1 after three, but after that Superior went scoreless while Lakeville North scored eight runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to advance to the consolation championship game.

Taylor Olson made his pitching debut for the Reds, allowing 11 hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Two of his strikeouts were the first two batters of the game. His third was against T.J. Evanson, a member of the University of Wisconsin-Superior baseball team.

One inning after the Yellowjackets’ home run leader struck out, Evanson hit a three-run home run off Olson in the sixth inning.

Evanson also picked up the win in relief of Dalton, Lehnen, who pitched the first two innings. Evanson allowed five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Superior had 10 hits, including a two doubles and two RBIs from Nik Mattson. Sam Schiff added a RBI double and single; Jordan Hughes singled twice; and Zach Magdzas, Tyler Long and Trent Olson singled.

Chester Bird 12, Reds 4

Superior took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and led 4-2 after two innings, but after that it was all Chester Bird as it scored five runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth to pull away from the Reds.

The Reds had six hits, led by Schiff, who was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Dylan Ramage added two hits and an RBI; Spencer Koskie knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice; and Taylor Olson and Clayton Yeazle singled.

Jimmy Heck was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Chester Bird. Robby Sutherland had two hits; Joe Melles had two hits and an RBI; Gabe MacDonald had a hit and three RBIs; Keaton Studsrud had a hit and two RBIs; and John Backes and Sam Lynch singled.

Backes was the winning pitcher, allowing six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Long and Mattson pitched for the Reds, allowing 11 hits with two strikeouts and eight walks.

Reds 8, Thunder Bay 5

Clayton Yeazle picked up the complete-game victory over Thunder Bay Saturday morning, allowing eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Taylor MacAskill and Tyler Moskalyk pitched for Thunder Bay, allowing 11 hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Hughes led Superior offensively, going 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Trent Olson was also 3-for-4 with an RBI; Ramage doubled and had an RBI single; Schiff tripled and singled; Taylor Olson doubled and knocked in a run; and Mattson and Ryan Myhre singled.

Brendon Toumisto was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Thunder Bay.

After Thunder Bay’s Hayden Phirbny opened the game with a walk and scored on a Toumisto single, Yeazle found his grove and retired the side in order in the second, third and fourth innings.

Three Superior errors led to a Thunder Bay run in the fifth inning and another run scored during a Reds’ 1-6-3 double play in the sixth.

Thunder Bay’s final two runs came in the top of the seventh on RBI singles by Phirbny and Toumisto.

Superior’s first run came in the second inning when Schiff singled and scored on Hughes’ single.

The Reds took a 4-1 lead in the fourth when Myhre singled and scored on an error; Trent Olson, who reached on a bunt single, scored on Taylor Olson’s suicide-squeeze bunt; and Schiff, who tripled, scored on a balk.

In the fifth Ramage doubled and scored on Koskie’s ground ball. Koskie then scored on another RBI single by Hughes.

Superior’s final run came in the sixth inning when Taylor Olson doubled and scored on Ramage’s single.

Chester Bird 12, Reds 6

Chester Bird scored four runs in the first inning and never looked. The Birds also scored single runs in the third and fourth innings then put the game away with a six-run sixth inning.

Marcus Barone picked up the win for Chester Bird, allowing three runs in six innings. He also allowed seven hits with seven strikeouts and two walks before giving way to Scott Quinby, who pitched the seventh inning.

Ramage suffered the loss for the Reds, allowing eight hits with four walks, four strikeouts and five hit batters.

Studsrud was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Gabe MacDonald hit a three-run triple to lead Chester Bird offensively. Barone, Melles, Sutherland, Matt Ambre, Backes and Lynch added a hit apiece.

Superior had eight hits, led by Yeazle, who was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Tyler Long, 2-for-3. Koskie added a double, Trent Olson and Myhre singled and Zach Magdzas knocked in a run with a sac fly.

Superior scored a run in the second inning when Koskie doubled and scored on a double play.

The Reds got within 6-3 in the top of the sixth inning when Yeazle was hit by a pitch, Magdzas struck out, but reached on an error, and both scored on errors.

After Chester Bird blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning, Superior scored three runs in the top of the seventh. Taylor Olson was hit by a pitch and scored on Yeazle’s double. Koskie, who walked, scored on Magdzas’ sac fly, and Yeazle scored on a wild pitch.

Reds 10, Proctor 5

Myhre picked up the complete-game victory against Proctor, scattering eight hits along with 10 strikeouts and four walks.

After allowing three runs in the second inning and two more in the third, Myhre got stronger, facing just 14 batters and striking out six in the final four innings. He also struck out four straight batters, the final two outs of the fifth inning and the first two outs of the sixth.

Alex Oaches suffered the loss for Proctor, allowing nine runs in four innings. He also allowed 12 hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Matt Dolsen allowed one run in the final two innings.

Myhre also had a good day at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. Trent Olson added a two-run triple and a single; Ramage and Yeazle each had two singles and two RBIs; Koskie had two singles and an RBI; and Taylor Olson had a RBI single.

The Reds also got two singles from Sam Schiff and a double from Nik Mattson

For Proctor, Jimmy Merling had a two-run single, Dolsen had a pair of RBI singles and Jack Nikko had a RBI groundout. Evan Scherber also doubled and singled; Paul Hegstrom singled twice; and Ryan McCarthy doubled.

Superior took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Trent Olson singles and eventually scored on a wild pitch, and Mattson doubled and scored on Taylor Olson’s single.

Ramage’s two-run single gave the Reds a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Proctor came back with a two-run third inning, but the Reds answered again and took a 6-5 lead on Trent Olson’s two-run triple.

Superior made it a 9-5 game in the fourth when Schiff singled and scored on a wild pitch, Koskie hit a RBI single and Myhre hit a RBI double.

Myhre scored Superior’s final run in the sixth inning when he double and scored on Yeazle’s sac fly.
