Walker issues statement, plans tour concerning northern Wisconsin flooding Friday

Gov. Scott Walker released the following statement today about the flooding conditions in the northwest corner of the state:

“Our thoughts are with all of the people impacted by the significant flooding in the northwest corner of the state.” Walker said in a prepared statement. “Our greatest concern in severe weather situations is that everyone does what they can to keep themselves and their families safe. We are in constant contact with Wisconsin Emergency Management as they work to assess the damages so we can pursue the best options for recovery moving forward.”

Over the past couple of days, parts of Douglas, Bayfield and Ashland Counties received a significant amount of rain and flooding. Some areas received eight inches of rain or more, resulting in road closures, power outages and damages to roads and homes. In Douglas County, at least 75 homes sustained damages ranging from $2,000 to $40,000.”

According to Wisconsin Emergency Management, in Clark County, three people died early Thursday morning in car crash that happened on an area of road that appears to have washed out due to heavy rains.

The Wisconsin Disaster Fund is available to assist with protective measures, debris clearance and road repairs. Municipalities and counties may apply for assistance from the DOT Flood Damage Aid Program, to help with road damages and repairs.

Walker also announced today plans to visit the Superior area in Douglas County, which was hit with heavy rains and flooding this week.

Governor Scott Walker will travel to the area Tuesday morning to survey the damage from flooding that occurred on June 19th and 20th. Governor Walker spoke to Superior Mayor Bruce Hagen this morning about the storm damage in his community and the ongoing damage assessments.

“We continue to monitor the storm damage in Superior, and once we have the damage assessments, we will be able to help determine what resources are available to assist. Dealing with flooding is always difficult and my heart goes out to all of those with damage to their homes.” Governor Scott Walker said.

The timing of the Governor’s trip is intended to ensure there is no interference with operations critical to the recovery process following this severe weather event.
