‘Celebrate the Fourth in a Superior way’

The final planning for the 15th annual Citizens Fourth of July Celebration is in the works.

With about 80 floats, bands, dozens of cars ready to roll onto Tower Avenue, a flyover lined up and the fireworks ready to explode, about a dozen residents have been hard at work to bring the city “Celebrating the Fourth in a Superior Way.”

The parade that starts at Superior High and ends at Superior Middle School along 28th Street and Hammond Avenue starts at 11 a.m.

When the parade committee used that route four years ago, “we had a really big turnout,” said Citizens Fourth of July Committee co-chairman, Dave Stannard.

Then, like now, the parade was rerouted because of traffic detours related to bridge construction.

It’s a route the committee is likely to use for the next few years with projects planned for the Blatnik and Bong bridges, and Belknap Street.

Following the parade, it’s time to head to Heritage Park for the Superior Singers patriotic performance @ 1 p.m. Then time to head downtown for cars, music — and new this year — activities for the kids sponsored by the city at Center City Park, Stannard said.

Free Fallin’ is performing a tribute to Tom Petty from 2 to 6 p.m. on the corner of North 12th Street west of Tower Avenue during the car show.

“It is a great community event and we thank the city for helping out,” Stannard said.

He said Mayor Bruce Hagen, and Parks and Recreation Administrator Mary Morgan have really stepped up to lend a hand with the annual event planned each year by 10-12 citizens.

Following the car show it’s time to head to the fairgrounds for a performance by the Bugs at 7 p.m.

Stannard said he expects the performance to bring the festivities of the grand finale of the city’s Independence Day celebration — the annual fireworks show at the Bong Memorial Airport at dusk.

“Hopefully we draw a great crowd,” Stannard said
