A $68,000 project for an upgrade to the current Automated Weather Observing Station (AWOS) at the Richard I. Bong Airport in Superior was announced today by Gov. Scott Walker.

Craig Butler, airport project manager with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), said the updated AWOS unit will enhance safety for inbound and departing aircraft by providing continuous weather reports.

The Superior AWOS is one of Wisconsin’s 40 AWOS units used by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Weather Service to analyze and forecast weather conditions.

The upgrade is scheduled to be completed by August.

Funding for the project will come from three sources. The state will provide $1,700. The city of Superior will provide a matching $1,700. The additional $64,600 will come from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Richard I. Bong Airport has two runways, a 5,100 foot paved runway and a 4,000 foot paved crosswind runway.
