Funding has been secured for a $473,597 project to upgrade the electrical system and install navigational aids at the Solon Springs Municipal Airport in Douglas County.

Stacey Miller, airport engineering specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), said the project will increase visibility and safety for pilots landing at the airport. The runway lighting will be upgraded from low intensity to medium intensity lighting.

The project is scheduled to be completed by October 2012.

Funding will come from a trio of sources. The state will contribute $19,618, the village and town of Solon Springs will provide another $19,619. The remaining $434,360 will come from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Solon Springs Municipal Airport is located two miles south of the village of Solon Springs. It has one paved runway, which is 3,100 feet.
