Kutz, Monaghan claim Irvin 5K titles

DULUTH — Grandma’s Marathon weekend kicked off Friday night with the William A. Irvin 5K — the first of numerous races scheduled for the 36th annual event.

Sean Kutz, 22, won the 3.1-mile race in a time of 15 minutes and 54 seconds. Kutz, of Grantsburg, held off 17-year-old Ryan Kromer by four seconds.

In the women’s division, Duluth’s Kathleen Monaghan, 44, took the title in 19:09. Amanda Bowman, 19, also of Duluth, placed second in 19:36.

National titles will be decided Saturday morning with the running of the USA Half Marathon Championships. Some of the country’s top half marathoners are here seeking a share of the $82,000 prize purse — with $12,000 going to the top male and female. The men start at 6:15 a.m., and the women follow 10 minutes later.

Also, the 22nd annual Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon and 36th annual Grandma’s Marathon are tomorrow at 6:45 a.m. and 7:45 a.m., respectively. A record field of 7,628 is registered for the half marathon, while 7,641 are signed up for the full marathon.
