Meet fellow kayakers and explore local paddling spots when the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s campus recreation program resumes its free summer “community paddle” on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. The first community paddle is set for today at Barker’s Island.
In addition, this summer young paddlers can learn skills and gain experience through the new youth paddle held the third Wednesday evening of each month. The first youth paddle is June 20.
Community paddles provide opportunities for kayakers to visit public water-access points around Superior and meet other people interested in the sport. Skilled staff members from the university’s Superior Outdoor Adventure Program are on hand to help novices, answer questions, demonstrate techniques and guide the paddles.
For the youth paddles, all youths participating will need a parent or guardian available each week to complete a release form.
SOAP provides kayaks for rental. Experienced kayakers are encouraged to bring their own equipment.
Each community paddle and youth paddle runs 5-7 p.m. when weather permits. For information and the location of each week’s community paddle, contact UW-Superior’s Campus Recreation Office at SOAP@uwsuper.edu or (715) 395-4604.
