Third-annual Icebreaker softball tournament includes 27 teams

The third-annual Superior Youth Organization Icebreaker Fast Pitch Softball Tournament will talk place this weekend with 27 teams from three different states battling in four divisions.

The tournament begins today and runs through Sunday at Wade Bowl, Superior Women’s Field, Liebaert Field and the Superior Middle School Fields.

Divisions include 10U,12U,14U and 16U.

Local teams entered into the tournament include, Superior Breakers (10U), Superior Storm and Northwestern (12U), Superior Menace and Northwestern (14U), and Superior Cougars (16U).

Overall, more than 300 players and 60 coaches will be in Superior this weekend.

“This tournament is a nice fundraiser for the SYO and great for the local economy,” tournament organizer John Gidley said. “It takes a total group effort by the entire SYO board to pull off a tournament of this size.”

The tournament has three defending champions returning, including the Anoka Tornadoes (10U), Seymour Flames (12U) and Minnesota Dynamite of Cloquet (14U). All three teams have moved up a division this year.

The tournament opens with four games today at the Hayes Court Complex.

In 16U action at Liebaert Field, it’s the Duluth Thunder vs. the Duluth Lightning at 6 p.m. and in 14U play it’s the Superior Menace vs. the Hurley Midgets at 7:30 p.m. At the same time on the Superior Women’s Field, the 16U Superior Cougars play the Duluth Whitecaps at 6 p.m. and the Keeweena’s Favorites at 7:30 p.m.

Action begins again at 8 a.m. Saturday and runs through 9 p.m. when two games are scheduled.

Play begins at 8:30 a.m. Sunday and the tournament wraps up with the 16U championship game at 4;15 p.m. on the Women’s Field.

Admission to all games is free and concessions will be available. No carry-ons will be allowed.
