Duluth: Animal Allies holds a 2012 Walk for Animals at Bayfront Festival Park. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the walk at 10 a.m. The event includes an obstacle course, contests for walkers and their pets, artwork made by shelter animals for sale, a continental breakfast and more. Solon Springs: A free Children’s Festival runs 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Lucius Woods Park. The event features award-winning entertainer Rick Kelley. Children receive toy instruments when they participate in the games and activities. They can also make their own drums, shakers and other instruments out of household items during a workshop. The children take the stage to demonstrate their musical skills to the audience. Free.

Pattison State Park: Join the Electronics Pirates Treasure Hunt at 1 p.m. Pirates have jumped the old galleon and boards the Technology Queen, flying the black flag of the GPS —Grubbiest Pirates of Suburbia. With your family or your group, cruise the dry-land Ocean Pattison to find the ten pots of gold with only an eTrex GPS unit (provided) to guide you along this GPS 101 voyage. Superior: The summer reading programs for children in preschool through grade five, “Dream Big Read!” and for children in grades six and above, “Own the Night,” begin at the Superior Public Library, 1530 Tower Ave. Prizes and books awarded for reading. Pattison State Park: Native American Flute Player, Michael Charette, is a member of the Red Cliff band of Lake Superior Indians. He also goes by the name Baapi Waagoosh, meaning “Laughing Fox” in the Anishinaabe language. Duluth: The Duluth Huskies teamed up with Life House to “Throw Homelessness a Curveball,” a special night at the ballpark to raise money and awareness for homeless and at-risk youth. The game begins at 7:05 p.m. at Duluth’s Wade Stadium.

Thursday

Duluth: The Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross hosts the Minnesota SCA Survivor Network 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chapter’s headquarters, 2524 Maple Grove Road. Free. Space is limited and RSVPs are encouraged.

Duluth: The local Proctor-Duluth Unit 92 of the National Association of Retired & Veteran Railway Employees meets at 1 p.m. at the West Duluth American Legion clubrooms. Included in the regular business will be a report on the recent 38th bi-annual National Convention, by National Legislative Committeeman Glen Nelson. The next regular meeting is Sept 13.
