Three of the county’s constitutional officers are facing re-election — county clerk, register of deeds and county treasurer.
County Clerk Sue Sandvick and Treasurer Linda Helenius are running unopposed, but Gayle Wahner, the county’s register of deeds, is facing a challenge for the seat from fellow Democrat Mike Kapalin of rural Superior.
Wahner has held the seat since elected to office in 2006, when former register of deeds Kathy Hanson decided to retire.
The Douglas County Register of Deeds isn’t a glamorous job, but it’s an important one.
The office overseen by the Register of Deeds is responsible for recording and maintaining real estate documents, death and birth certificates and other vital information. More than 10,000 documents are recorded each year for the public.
State Rep. Nick Milroy is also facing re-election this fall, but he is running unopposed.
