Christian John Berchild, son of Nicholas Berchild and Pamela Schroeder of Superior, recently was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant United States Army on May 18, 2012, at the University of Minnesota ROTC Officer Commissioning Ceremony.

Christian John Berchild, son of Nicholas Berchild and Pamela Schroeder of Superior, recently was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant United States Army on May 18, 2012, at the University of Minnesota ROTC Officer Commissioning Ceremony.

He has been assigned to the Massachusetts Army National Guard Infantry Division. He begins training as an infantry officer Oct. 15 at Fort Benning, Ga., and will include airborne and ranger officer training.

Prior to his commission, 2nd Lt. Berchild served in the enlisted ranks as a combat engineer, 950th Clearance Company, Wisconsin Army National Guard since age 17. He is a 2007 graduate of Superior High School. His foreseeable plans after completion of his military training is to attend law school in Boston, Mass.

Nicholas Berchild joined the U.S. Navy right out of high school in July 1977 serving on the USS King, USS Marvin Shields and USS John L. Hall. He served as a Signalman 1st Class Petty Officer. He served 10 years active duty and 10 years in the reserve.
