Nelson repeats as state champ in 300 hurdles

Nelson also places in 100 hurdles; Naumann, Holly make podium in 300 hurdles, pole vault

Northwestern High School junior Tess Nelson repeated as 300-meter hurdles champion at the WIAA Division 2 state track and field meet Saturday at UW-La Crosse.

Nelson, who finished second in Friday’s preliminary race, won the final in 45.66 seconds to edge runner-up Kathryn Croney of Oconto (45.86) by two-tenths of a second.

Nelson also finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.71 seconds; teammate Logan Holly, a junior, was fifth in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet and senior Mike Naumann, was timed in 40.45 to finish sixth in the boys 300 hurdles.

Nelson’s preliminary time of 45.96 was just behind the time of 45.96 turned in by Amelia Campbell of Sturgeon Bay.

Nelson was seventh after the 100 hurdles preliminary with a time of 15.51. Catholic’s Memorial’s Kaitlyn Hastings, who earned the No. 1 seed in 14.88. also won the final in 14.70.

Tigers’ Mike Naumann also made it to the finals in the 300-meter hurdles after finishing sixth in the prelim race with a time of 40.66. T.C. Smith of Dodge was the No. 1 seed with a preliminary time of 39.74. Ray Callaway of G.E.T. went on to win the final in 39.33. Smith finished third and Naumann was sixth in 40.45.

Also in action Friday for the Tigers were the 4x100 relay team of Duncan Magerl, Alex Reynolds, Mike Parkins and Zak Anttila, who finished in 14th place and the 4x200 relay of Anttila, Reynolds, Parkins and Naumann, who were disqualified and didn’t finish the race.

Johnson missed out on placing in the 1,600 by one spot after finishing ninth with a time of 5:10.41. Molly Hanson of Dodge/Mineral Point won the race in 4:54.80.

TIGER TALES: Bonnie Draxler of Wrightstown won the pole vault with a heith of 12-7.
