Tigers' Nelson and Naumann advance to hurdle finals
Superior 4x400 relay misses finals by less than a second
Northwestern High School’s Tess Nelson is in position to repeat as the Division 2 state championship in the 300-meter hurdles thanks to a second-place finish in Friday’s preliminary race at the WIAA State Track and Field Meet at UW-La Crosse.
Nelson’s time of 45.96 was just behind the time of 45.96 turned in by Amelia Campbell of Sturgeon Bay.
Nelson also finished seventh in the 110 hurdle prelim with a time of 15.51. The No. 1 seed is Kaitlyn Hastings of Catholic Memorial, 14.88.
Tigers’ Mike Naumann also made it to the finals in the 300-meter hurdles after finishing sixth in the prelim race with a time of 40.66. T.C. Smith of Dodge is the No. 1 seed with a time of 39.74.
Also in action Friday for the Tigers were the 4x100 relay team of Duncan Magerl, Alex Reynolds, Mike Parkins and Zak Anttila, who finished in 14th place and the 4x200 relay of Anttila, Reynolds, Parkins and Naumann, who were DQ’d and didn’t finish the race.
Still to compete for Northwestern are Logan Holly in the pole vault and Jordan Johnson in the 1,600.
Spartans also in action
The Superior High School track and field team failed to pick up any points during the first day of the WIAA State Track and Field Meet at UW-La Crosse.
The closest the Spartans came to making a final event was in the girls 4x400-meter relay where they finished in 11th place with a time of 4:03.98. Only the fastest 10 times advance to the finals and Hortonville grabbed the final spot with a time of 4:03.82. The No. 1 seed in Saturday’s final is Milwaukee Riverside University with a time of 3:55.43. Members of the 4x400 for Superior were Raya Kosey, Leah Holmes, Giselle Sziron and Lauren Magnuson.
Also for Superior, Carter Anderson came in 21st place in the 110-hurdles heat with a time of 15.78. Germantown’s Ben Holcomb is the No. 1 seed in 14.35.
Evan Walpole came in 25th place in the 1,600 prelim with a time of 4:41.63. Carl Hursch of Brookfield Central is the No. 1 seed with a time of 4:08.21.
Magnuson came in 12th place in the 100-meter prelim with a time of 12.69. The No. 1 seed is Elexis Fuller-Stewart of Milwaukee Bradley Tech with a time of 11.74.
Kosey’s time of 1:00 in the 400 was good for 15th place in the prelim race. The No. 1 seed is Crystal Malone of Milwaukee Riverside has the fastest time heading into the final at 57.08.
Sziron finished 23rd in the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.75. The No. 1 seed is Amber Sanderson of La Crosse Logan, 44:17.
Superior’s 4x100 relay finished 22nd in 51:19. Members of the relay were Natalie Kintop, Kosey, Autumn Nelson and Magnuson.
The only event remaining for Superior is Holmes in the 1,600.
