Eagle rally comes up short against Lumberjacks

GRAND VIEW — The season came to end for the Solon Springs baseball team with a 3-2 loss to the Drummond Lumberjacks Wednesday afternoon. The WIAA Division 4 regional championship game was played at the Grand View Park.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Tyler Long singled home Kevin Zamzow, who walked.

Drummond eventually took a 2-1 lead and threatened for more runs in the fifth inning until Solon Springs pulled off an inning-ending double play.

The Lumberjacks added a run in the sixth inning when Jeff Ludzack walked and an error on a sac bunt was followed by Ben Best’s RBI double.

Drummond attempted to score a second run on the hit, but Solon Springs shortstop Brett Missinne threw out the runner at the plate.

The Eagles made things interesting in the top of the seventh as Phil Larson walked with two outs and scored on Long’s double just inside the right-field line. The game ended with a strike out and the tying run on second base.

“Our goals for every game are to commit less than two errors, walk less than four and get two or more big hits,” SSHS coach Nate Ahlberg said. “We achieved the first two, but couldn’t get the big hit.”

The Eagles were 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Jordan Miller was the winning pitcher for Drummond, allowing five hits with 15 strikeouts and four walks.

Long suffered the complete-game loss for the Eagles, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Long was also 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs with the bat.

Zamzow and Missinne had the Eagles’ remaining hits.

Drummond takes a 14-6 record into Thursday’s sectional semifinal game at Bruce. The game begins at 11 a.m.
