Weekly unemployment benefit applications rose to the highest level in five weeks last week, a sign that the job market remains sluggish. Applications increased 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 383,000.
Here are the states with the biggest increases and decreases in applications. The state data is for the week ended May 19, one week behind the national data.
States with the biggest drops:
Wisconsin: Down 1,240, no reason given
States with the biggest increases:
California: Up 2,716, due to layoffs in the service industry
Texas: Up 1,648, no reason given
South Carolina: Up 1,029, due to layoffs in manufacturing
