The 4th annual Pat Moreland 5K and Mini Track Meet will be held Saturday, June 9 at the Northwestern High School Track in Maple.
The 5k will begin at 9 a.m. and the mini track meet will begin at 10 a.m. Pre-registration is $12 per runner if pre-registered or $15 on race day. (A family rate is also available. Race day registration will be from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m.) Each participant will recieve a commemorative Pat Moreland 5K/Mini Track Meet Tee shirt. Kids in the mini track meet will also get medals and will have a chance to win one of two bikes to be given away courtesy of Olson Brothers Contractors of Brule. There will also be kids games, including the popular tug-of-war and water balloon toss events plus many more. Entry fee is good for both events.
The races are a fundraiser for the facilities at the Gordon L. Nelson Athletic Complex at Northwestern High School and honor Lake Nebagamon’s running legend Pat Moreland, a longtime educator in the Maple School District and storied runner.
Moreland’s running streak, that began on Dec. 10, 1987, ended this past year due to health issues, but his legend continues. Moreland has an impressive running resume, including competing in the 26-mile Boston Marathon three times in addition to marathons in Duluth, Hurley, Disney World, Las Vegas, Chicago, Portland, Appleton, Los Angeles, Portland and Eagle River.
Moreland and his wife Leona reside in Lake Nebagamon.
Their grandsons have won each of the first three overall races as Kels Moreland won in 2009 and 2010 and brother Dane Moreland won on 2011. Jordan Johnson of Lakeside has won all three women’s overall events. There will be awards for both men’s and women’s divisions with numerous age groups.
