Senior Morgan Dorfman is the recipient of the Student Achievement Award for 2012 from the Superior High School.
The Student Achievement Award is funded by the current and retired Superior school district employees to help community-minded students further their post-secondary education. Initiated in 1999, the award’s main purpose is to reward a student who has demonstrated interest in volunteer service and commitment to the community.
The award committee was impressed with the character references Dorfman provided, which described the senior as “blessed with a keen curiosity, diverse interests, generous spirit, dependable (and) admirable leadership skills.”
Dorfman, daughter of Heidi Misfeldt and Jeff Dorfman of Superior, is the youngest of five children.
She participated in ballet for 12 years, and for three of those years she assisted challenged children who participated in the program.
“I was there to teach them, but they also taught me so much,” Dorfman said. “One of the lessons they taught me was to always celebrate the small victories in life.”
Dorfman also participated in the Chamber of Commerce youth leadership program, the Northland Foundation Youth Leadership Program and the SHS student council. She said the student council helped her learn about charity work, organizational skills and the challenges in planning events to get the whole school to participate.
Dorfman plans to attend the University of Minnesota Duluth in the fall to prepare for a career as a publicist. She had a chance to job shadow for J. Public Relations in California to learn about the way the company represents its clients to the media. On her way to becoming a publicist she plans to transfer to another college on the east coast to continue studies in journalism and business.
Morgan will receive $500 for college expenses from the Student Achievement Award.
