Spartan golfers advance to state

The Superior High School boys golf team won the WIAA Division 1 sectional championship this afternoon at the Riveredge Golf Course in Marshfield.

The Spartans finished with a team score of 331, six strokes ahead of River Falls team score of 337. Superior and River Falls also finished 1-2 at last week’s regional tournament. The Spartans won the regional crown after one hole of sudden death.

Individually for Superior, Chris Rochon finished in second place with a 79. River Falls’ Garrett Loomis was the medalist with a 78.

Also for Superior, Spencer Sitek tied for ninth with an 83; Daniel Burger tied for 14th with an 84; Nolan Holcombe’s 85 tied him for 19th place and Blake Johnson finished tied for 28th among the field of 48 golfers with a 90.

Superior and River Falls now qualify for the WIAA State Tournament Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge in Madison.
