Dinkel, Alexson lead Tigers to pair of team titles

The Northwestern High School golf team wrapped up its second championship in less than a week.

The Tigers, who won the Heart O’ North Championship last week at the Bloomer Memorial Golf Course, topped it off by winning the WIAA Division 3 championship Tuesday afternoon at the Hayward Golf Club.

Northwestern finished with a team score of 312 Tuesday, 17 strokes better than runner-up Medford Area’s 329.

The Tigers can also boast having the regional medalist as Justin Alexson finished first with a 75, two strokes better than Hayward’s Logan Jacobs and Ashland’s Drew Matheus.

Up next for the Tigers is the sectional meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Unity.

The top two teams and the top three individuals, not on the top two teams, will advance to the WIAA state tournament June 4-5 at University Ridge in Madison.

HON meet

Last Thursday, Dinkel defeated Bloomer senior Logan Price in a sudden death playoff to win the Heart O’ North Conference championship at Bloomer.

The two golfers tied with 6-over-par 77s through 18 holes. Dinkel won the playoff on the second hole with a par.

Alexson finished third with a 78 as the Tigers captured the team title. Pearson and Lindsay both shot 86 for Northwestern.

Dinkel had the conference regular-season championship all but wrapped up going into Thursday, but winning the final meet of the season was vindication after losing on the 18th hole the past two seasons.

Also for Northwestern, Pearson and Dinkel tied for fifth place with 78s, Vik was ninth with an 81, and Lindsay was 13th at 83.
