The awesome Superior Senior High School golf team rode the crest of a school record-setting effort to walk through the WIAA regional golf meet in Spooner. The Spartans pleased coach Bernie Tomzak when they carded a sizzling 305 total, led by Jim Simon’s medalist round of 74. But, the talk of the meet was Jim Crawford’s 32 on the back nine, one stroke off the Spooner course’s record. He combined the round with a 43 on the front for a total of 75. Dave Olson and Vaughn Russom, with 78s, rounded out the team scoring at 28 strokes better than Spooner’s runner-up total of 333. (1980)
Tim Callaway fired a hole-in-one at the 123-yard fourth hole at the Nemadji Golf Course, using a 9-iron to put the ball in the cup on the fly. He was golfing with his father, Dr. Allan Callaway, and Don Nummi Jr. (1981)
