WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of St. Thomas hit three home runs in its first four at-bats and punched out 21 hits in a 22-2 victory over the St. Scholastica baseball team Friday evening in the NCAA Division III Whitewater Regional at Prucha Field.
The top-seeded Tommies and sixth-seeded Saints were the lone 2-0 teams left at the eight-team regional and the winner would be in the driver seat.
The Tommies led from the onset as Tim Kuzniar led off the game with a home run. After one out, Charles Bruchu and Dylan Thomas homered back-to-back to extend the margin to 3-0.
After scoreless innings in the second and third, St. Thomas added two more runs in the fourth to make it 5-0. However, the big inning for the Tommies would be the fifth when 12 batters came to the plate until the first out was recorded. For the inning, St. Thomas scored 11 runs on nine hits to make it 16-0.
After the Tommies added three more in the top of the sixth, the Saints got on the scoreboard when Kyle Jensen hit a two-run home run. St. Thomas added three more runs in the eighth to make the final score 22-2.
CSS last gave up 22 runs against South Dakota State in 2003. The Saints gave up 21 runs to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in a 21-13 regional final defeat in 2008.
The Saints managed only five hits with Tom Juberian recording two of those. Michael Swenson suffered his first defeat of the season, lasting 3.2 innings. The Tommies had nine extra base hits in the contest. J.D. Dorgan had five RBIs to lead St. Thomas at the plate.
The Saints (35-10) will now play the UW-Whitewater/Aurora University winner at noon Saturday in an elimination game. CSS will have to win twice Saturday to force a winner-take-all championship game on Sunday. St. Thomas (37-8) will await the winner of the noon game and will have to beaten twice.
