Tigers ball teams enjoy mixed success vs. ’Canes

NHS girls win at Hayward, boys lose at home

The Hayward Hurricanes improved to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the Heart O’ North Conference with a 7-2 win over the Northwestern Tigers Tuesday evening in Iron River.

The Hurricanes, who led 2-0 after four innings, scored twice in the fifth inning, once in the sixth and two more times in the seventh.

Northwestern (4-11, 1-9) scored both of its runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Wes Ogren’s RBI single and Tanner Follis’ RBI single.

The Tigers still had the bases loaded with one out, but Hayward pitcher Aaron Martin got out of the jam by retiring the next two batters.

The Tigers threatened again in the seventh inning when Andrew Perry tripled with one out, but the game ended when Nolan Graff lined out to Hayward third baseman Paul Danczyk, who stepped on third base to complete the game-ending double play.

Abe Reichert’s RBI triple was also among Hayward’s eight hits.

The Tigers are at Cumberland at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Softball

The Northwestern softball team returned from Hayward Tuesday evening with a 2-0 victory over the Hurricanes.

The Tigers scored runs in the fourth and fifth innings to improve to 8-6 overall and 6-5 in the HON.

Shelby Schultz singled and eventually scored after Grein walked and Eller reached on an error.

Alex Bodendorfer scored in the fifth inning when she drew a one-out walk and scored on Sarah Miller’s second hit of the game.

Aliex Friend had the Tigers other two hits, both singles.

Schultz tossed a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Tigers.

Bailey Yuknis and Denise Kannegiesser singled for Hayward.

Northwestern hosts Cumberland at 5 p.m. Thursday.
