Rep. Nick Milroy, D-South Range, has been recognized by the Disabled American Veterans of Wisconsin with an award for his efforts in passing Senate Bill 369, which creates income and franchise tax credits for businesses hiring unemployed veterans who have a disability. SB 369 was passed unanimously by the Legislature and signed into law by the governor April 4.
“I am humbled to receive recognition for pushing this legislation through,” said Milroy. “Because the bill’s absentee author and Republican leadership in the Assembly failed to act, my Democratic colleagues and I had to pick up the torch for disabled veterans in Wisconsin and make sure their top priority became law.”
The bill gives businesses tax credits for hiring unemployed disabled veterans and benefits disabled veterans who find it difficult to find gainful employment. Under the bill, a business is allowed a $4,000 tax credit in the first year and $2,000 in each of the following three years it hires a full-time, unemployed, disabled veteran. A $2,000 tax credit is allowed also for hiring a part-time, unemployed, disabled veteran for the first year of employment and $1,000 for each of the following three years.
“It is unfortunate that Assembly Republicans were too preoccupied with pushing their extreme agenda during the final days of session to focus on important bills that provide jobs and opportunities for those that have sacrificed for our country,” said Milroy. “It was a pleasure for me to step in and act on behalf of this state’s disabled veterans and I look forward to continuing to work with the Disabled American Veterans of Wisconsin.”
Al Labelle, legislative director for Disabled American Veterans of Wisconsin, presented Milroy with the award.
