Spartan baseball team sweeps Chippewa Falls

SHS softball team goes 2-0 at Becker Tournament

The Superior High School baseball team swept a doubleheader from the Chippewa Falls Cardinals Saturday afternoon at Casper Park in Chippewa Falls. The Spartans won by scores of 7-2 and 7-5.

The wins improve Superior to 7-5 overall, including 5-1 against Big Rivers Conference opponents. The Spartans also swept Eau Claire North and defeated Menomonie. Their only loss was by one run in nine innings to Eau Claire North.

The losses drop the Cardinals to 9-8.

Grant Rindal and Ryan Myhre picked up the complete-game wins for Superior.

Rindal tossed a two-hitter with six strikeouts and four walks in the opener, while Myhre gave up five hits and two earned runs while walking five, striking out 12 and hitting a batter.

Superior had 15 hits in the opening game, including three by Clayton Yeazle. Spencer Severson, Dane Sislo and Jordan Hughes added two hits and an RBI apiece; Paul Edwards and Rindal had two hits each; Nik Mattson had a hit and RBI; and Taavi Mattson singled.

Jake Feirn went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals in the opener.

The Spartans tacked on 10 more hits in the second game, including two by Rindal and Severson and a RBI double and sac fly by Taavi Mattson. Edwards and Andy Glonek added a hit and RBI each and Nik Mattson, Yeazle and Hughes had a hit each. Severson also knocked in a run.

Zandy Stowell and Drew Steinmetz each had two hits for the Cardinals (9-8), including a double for Steinmetz.

"We overcame some mistakes in game two and in doing so, showed some toughness and determination," SHS coach Don Dembroski said. "This was good day for us as a team, we had contributions from a lot of different guys in both games. We hit and ran the bases well, but still need to clean some things up defensively.

"Grant was good in game one and Ryan did a good job of settling down after a wild start."

The Spartans are back in action at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Proctor.

SPARTAN SPIN: The Spartan JV lost 10-0 and 7-4. Tyler Lehikoinen started for the Spartans in the first game and pitched 4 2/3 innings allowing 10 runs (seven earned) on 11 hits while walking three and striking out one. The Spartans had two hits, a triple by Kyler Krob and a single by Phil McCotter. Logan Griffith started the second game and pitched three innings allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out one. Pete Guski pitched three innings of relief, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits and no walks. The Spartans had nine hits including two each from Griffith, Sean O'Neill and Brandon Moe. Jake Libal, McCotter and Peyton Flanders each had one hit.

Spartans win two in Becker

The Superior High School softball team topped Totino-Grace 7-1 and Belle Plaine 4-3 to advance to the final of the Becker Tournament Saturday, but the championship game against the host Bulldogs was rained out.

Alison Wainionpaa earned a complete game victory over Totino-Grace, allowing six hits, walking four and striking out eight. Rachal Fregin and Emily Hansen each drove in two runs, Jessica Lindstrom had a double and triple, stole a base and scored two runs, Tailor Schuster doubled, and Taylor Thompson and Kaitlyn Mergen each singled and knocked in run.

Superior struck right away in the first inning as Lindstrom double and score on an error.

In the third inning, Fregin singled, stole second and scored on Thompson’s single.

Fregin walked, Lindstrom reached on error, stole second and both scored on Hansen’s single in the fifth.

Schuster’s double came in the sixth inning. After moving to third on a ground out, she, along with Kari Miller, scored on Fregin’s two-run single.

In the seventh, Courtney Oak walked the bases loaded, scoring Katie Heinen, who was running for Thompson, who reached on an error.

Totino scored its run in third inning on an one-out error, sac bunt and a single.

Shannon Johnstad picked up the win, in relief of Thompson, against Belle Plaine, pitching three innings, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and two walks. Thompson allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts in the first four innings.

Kelsey Stender took the loss for Belle Plaine, allowing six hits with 12 strikeouts.

Hansen and Taylor Thompson each drove in two runs for Superior. Taylor Nelson also doubled and Schuster and Miller singled.

Superior took a 3-0 lead in the third inning with Nelson, who doubled, and Miller, who singled, scored on Hansen’s two-run double. Ari Jago, who reached on an error, also scored on Thompson’s sac fly.

Belle Plaine tied it up in the fourth inning when a one-out single was followed by a double, triple and single.

Superior’s winning run came in the fifth inning when Lindstrom reached on a two-out error, moved to second on Hansen’s single and scored on Thompson’s single.

The Spartans are at Cloquet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
