Two barber/cosmetology students from WITC-Superior took home big honors from the Wisconsin state SkillsUSA conference in April in Wisconsin Dells.
Emily Modin captured second place and Rene Miniatt won third place in the 2012 cosmetology competition.
A WITC student from the Rice Lake campus, Taylor Gappa landed the top prize, making it a sweep for Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College.
The students were judged on their skills completing a longer haircut and design as well as a shorter version haircut using a razor. All work was performed on mannequins. Written test scores and phone interviews were also factored into the total scores.
“It was a very positive experience for both the students and me,” said Charley Thompson, barber/cosmetology instructor. “We will definitely be looking forward to participating again.”
Both Modin and Miniatt will graduate next month with high honors. Fellow WITC-Superior classmates Katie Johnston and Nathen Arnce also competed in the event.
SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. This is the first time WITC’s barber/cosmetology program has competed in a statewide competition.
