Holmes has record-day at Rice Lake Invitational

SHS junior set school record in 800, then runs one of the state’s fastest times in 1,600

Superior High School junior Leah Holmes set a school record in the 800-meter run Friday at the Rice Lake Invitational and turned in one of the fastest times in the state in the 1,600.

“She ran a 5:13 mile and then about an hour and a half later set the school record in the 800,” said SHS coach Phil Roe. Holmes ran the 800 in a time of 2:12. “That is unbelievable considering the weather was in the 50s and we are not even in the taper/pure speed phase of our workouts.

“Leah is a great character and team captain. She leads by example and work ethic.”

Holmes was second in the 1,600 and third in the 800.

Freshman Giselle Sziron took second in the 300 hurdles in 48.8 seconds

“Giselle’s combination of pure speed and flexibility is shining through in this event for her,” Roe said. “She is an extremely hard worker and great overall student. I can’t wait to see how much better she is going to get in this event.”

Lauren Magnason, also a freshman, took third in the 100-meter dash, while junior Natalie Kintop finished seventh in the 400 with a time of 1:03.

“She is running stronger than I have ever seen from a midseason standpoint,” Roe said of Kintop. “Natalie has battled through many injuries in track and cross country, so her good performances as of late are pretty sweet and a credit to her strength and resiliency.”

For the boys, three runners scored and broke the five-minute mark in the 1,600-meter run. Evan Walpole took second, Brain Wines took fourth and Chris Carey took eighth.

Sophomore Carter Anderson also had a strong race in the 110 hurdles to take second.
