Spartan softball team drops pair at ECM

The Superior High School softball team fell to 1-4 on the season with losses of 5-0 and 4-3 Friday evening at Eau Claire Memorial.

The Spartans managed five hits in the opener, two each by Taylor Thompson and Kaitlyn Mergen and one by Kari Miller.

Alison Wainionpaa suffered the loss, allowing five hits with four strikeouts and 10 walks. Morganne Gruber was the winning pitcher for the Old Abes, allowing five hits with four strikeouts and one walk.

Superior scored all three of its runs in the second game in the fifth inning.

Emily Hansen started things with a double, Miller singled and Jessica walked to load the bases. After Hansen was thrown out at home on Thompson’s fielder’s choice, Mergen knocked in two runs with a single and Savannah Oak, a courtesy runner, scored on Taylor Nelson's single.

Syd Neville scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning to give the Old Abes the lead. After reaching on an error, Neville scored after two base hits and a close play at home on a throw from right fielder Rachal Fregin.

Mergen once again led the Spartans with two hits and two RBIs.

Thompson suffered the loss for Superior, allowing nine hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Miranda Ritter was the winner, allowing 10 hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV won both games 16-5 and 6-1. Shannon Johnstad and Kaitlin Heinen were the winning pitchers.
