Spartan girls stumble at Hermantown

The Superior High School softball team dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Lake Superior Conference on Thursday with a 6-3 loss to the Hermantown Hawks (4-0, 1-0).

Hermantown scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings to take a 6-1 lead through five innings. In the top of the sixth Superior added two runs to cut the lead to three, but Hermantown pitcher Katie Thun struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.

“Our goal tonight was to come into this game with confidence against a strong team,” said SHS coach Amy Zembo. “We faced one of the best pitchers in the state of Minnesota and did a great job hitting the ball. Hermantown is a well-coached, state-contending team year to year, and I think overall we put out a great effort.”

The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a leadoff walk, error and a single. In the second inning Supeiror’s Taylor Thompson led off with a single. Savannah Oak served as courtesy runner and moved to second on a sac bunt by Kaitlyn Mergen and then scored on a single to right field from Tailor Schuster.

Hermantown answered in the third inning with a two-out, two-run home run by Thun. The Hawks then added another pair of runs in the fourth with three singles and an error.

Superior closed out the scoring in the sixth inning with two runs. Thompson reached on an error and advanced to second on a single from Mergen. Schuster then reached base on a fielder’s choice and two runs came in on Taylor Nelson’s double to the left field fence.

Thun was the complete-game winner with 12 strikeouts and no walks. She allowed seven hits and two earned runs.

Taylor Thompson suffered the loss for Superior, giving up 10 hits and four earned runs in five innings while striking out four and walking one.

At the plate, Meagan Willis and JoAnna Carlson both went 2-for-3 for the Hawks, and Thun added a two-RBI homer.

Thompson and Nelson both went 2-for-3 to lead Superior. One of Nelson’s hits was a two-RBI double. Schuster was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Mergen was 1-for-2 and Emily Hansen finished with a double.
