Northwood girls defeat Comets, 4-3

The Northwood softball team improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Central Lakeland Conference Tuesday with a 4-3 victory over the Cameron Comets (7-2, 2-2).

Freshman McKayla Waggoner had the game-winning RBI for the Evergreens, bringing home Teagen Harings in the eighth inning to give Northwood the victory.

Harings was the winning pitcher, giving up two earned runs and 10 hits in eight innings of work while striking out seven and walking three.

Emily Kruger suffered the loss for Cameron, giving up only four hits in eight innings while striking out 10.

Errors hurt Northwood early, as Cameron took a 3-0 lead in the first inning following three Evergreen errors. Northwood went scoreless and hitless until the fifth inning but held the Comets in check with big defensive plays.

“We managed to keep 14 of their runners stranded on the bases to hold them scoreless the rest of the game,” said Beth Block, head coach of the Evergreens.

TeLaura Harings provided the first hit of the game for Northwood when she hit a single in the fifth inning. The freshman then moved to third on a throwing error on Sarah Olson’s bunt and scored on a ground ball hit by Allison Fouks.

In the sixth inning, Teagen Harings reached on an error and ended up scoring due to a pair of Cameron throwing errors on the play. Lisa Featherly’s base hit then scored Molly Linden to tie the game.

The Evergreens walked away with the win in the bottom of the eighth inning when Teagen Harings got on base with a triple to the left-center field gap. Waggoner’s line drive up the middle drove in the winning run.

Northwood finished with five errors, and Cameron had four.

The Evergreens are now second in the Central Lakeland Conference behind Shell Lake.

Northwood hosts Drummond at 5 p.m. today in a non-conference game and then travels to Turtle Lake Monday.
