Track and field
The SHS track teams each finished second at Duluth Denfeld on Tuesday. Also competing were Proctor, Duluth East and the host Hunters.
Leah Holmes was a double winner for the SHS girls, finishing first in the 800 and 1,600.
Other winners were: Lauren Magnuson (100) and Carissa Welch (pole vault).
“Lauren Magnuson ran into the 12 zone,” SHS coach Kris Leopold said. “A high school girl running the 12s in the 100 is like a high school boy running in the 10s. Only three girls from SHS have run the 12s since I’ve been here: Raya Kosey, Lauren and Kelli Stipetich, who still holds the record (12.62).”
Winning for the Spartan boys were: Carter Anderson, 300 hurdles; Colton Lorenz, long jump; Blake Sharpe, triple jump and Jaylon Brown, shot put.
The SHS boys also won two relays, the 800 (Alex Dzikionski, Anthony Valentine, Matt Little, Blake Sharpe); and the 400 (Dzikionski, Valentine, Lorenz, Kyle Johnson).
The Spartans are back in action at the Rice Lake Invitational at 4 p.m. Friday.
“We’re excited to go to Rice Lake and turn up the volume a little,” Leopold said. “Competing against Big Rivers Conference talent is what we need right now.”
Superior will also host a Lake Superior Conference meet at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Wessman Arena track.
