Stewart claims Hamlin Showdown
Cup champ wins Richmond late model event
RICHMOND, Va. — Reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart was the class of the field Thursday night in the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown at Richmond International Raceway.
Stewart dominated the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series sanctioned, non-points event. Driving for former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crew chief Lee McCall, Stewart picked up just his second career asphalt Late Model victory.
Pole sitter Greg Edwards, a two-time champion at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Va., finished second, followed by Brandon Butler. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Jeff Burton and Joey Logano rounded out the top five.
Ben Rhodes was sixth, followed by NASCAR K&N Pro Series driver Darrell Wallace Jr., 2011 Hamlin event winner CE Falk, Jason White and Garrett Campbell.
Hamlin was caught up in an early multi-car accident and finished 34th.
