Aim for success that matters in eternal picture

I have always wanted to start a procrastinators club, but I just never seem to get around to it. I have many reasons, but perhaps the greatest is the fear of failure. Wouldn’t it be terrible if I started a group for procrastinators and everyone showed up? It would be an utter disaster.

Fear of failure is a common deterrent to any number of activities in life. How many opportunities have you left slide because you questioned your ability to succeed? In light of this, we usually hear statements reminding us that trying and failing is better than not trying at all.

But what if there was something far worse than failure? What if succeeding ended in greater disappointment? What success could be worse than failure, you ask? How about succeeding in something that doesn’t really matter? It is an ironic idea that one can actually fail by succeeding.

Some succeed by taking care of themselves at the expense of others. Or, there are those who remain so earthly minded that they forget they were created to serve and glorify God. Some become so involved in humanity, that they lose the eternal picture and squander their lives on the temporary. It may be hard to believe, but we can succeed in the meaningless, and thereby fail.

In the end, when we face God, will he say, “Well done!” or “What have you done?” Remember, “Only one life, ‘twill soon be past, Only what’s done for Christ will last.”
