Tiger Roundup: Golf team wins twice; softball, baseball and track teams in action
The Northwestern boys golf team picked up two more Heart O’ North Conference wins Monday evening in Barron.
The Tigers carded a 162 as a team, well ahead of Bloomer’s 179 and Barron’s 182.
Northwestern’s Gabe Dinkel carded a 37 to share medalist honors. He also picked up 10 conference points.
Justin Alexson was close behind with a 38, Josiah Vik chipped in with a 43 and Peter Lindsay carded a 44. Grant Pearson had a non-counting 45.
The Tigers are at the Bloomer Invite at 9 a.m. Friday.
Softball
Abby Schulz’s sac fly in the top of the eighth inning scored the eventual game-winning run as the Northwestern Tigers defeated Cumberland 5-4 Tuesday evening in Cumberland.
Cumberland led 3-2 after six innings, Northwestern took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh before Cumberland forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Shelby Schultz was the complete-game winning pitcher, allowing eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Sarah Miller led the Tigers on offense with two hits, three RBIs and a run scored. Karaline Green added two hits with an RBI and a stolen base and Schultz doubled. Besides knocking in the winning run, Schulz doubled and scored twice.
The Tigers, now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Heart O’ North Conference, are at Bloomer at 4:30 p.m. Thursday and at Chetek at 11 a.m. Saturday for a doubleheader.
Cumberland falls to 1-5 and 0-1.
Baseball
Cumberland defeated Northwestern 9-5 Tuesday evening in Iron River.
The visiting Beavers scored three runs in the first inning and four more in the second for a commanding 7-0 lead. One of the Beavers’ runs came in on Adam Bielmeier’s triple in the second inning.
The Tigers got three of the runs back in the bottom of the second inning, then kept Cumberland off the board until the Beavers completed their scoring with a two-run sixth inning. One of Cumberland’s runs came on Tim Carlson’s RBI double.
The Tigers made things interesting in the bottom of seventh inning as Paul Langford hit a two-run single and Northwestern loaded the bases with one out. Cumberland got out of the jam with a fly out and a game-ending strikeout.
The loss drops Northwestern to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the Heart O’ North Conference. Cumberland improves to 5-4 and 1-1.
The Tigers had six hits. Andrew Perry had two hits and two RBIs and Brock Haugrud had two hits and one RBI.
Jaylin Lansin led Cumberland with two hits and four RBIs. Carlson also had two hits and two RBIs and Bielmeier had two hits and one RBI.
Track and field
The Northwestern track and field team competed in the Barron Invitational Thursday in Barron.
The Tiger girls finished third out of four teams while the NHS boys came in fourth place. Hayward won the girls team title and Barron was the boys champion.
Tess Nelson won the 200 and high jump for the Tiger girls. Jordan Johnson also won the 800, Elli Teige won the 3,200, and Logan Holly won the pole vault.
For the NHS boys, Ryan Lind won the 1,600, Ty Rankin won the 3,200 and the 4X200-meter relay team finished first.
