Spartan baseball team falls to 4-3

The Superior High School baseball team fell to 4-3 overall (0-2 Lake Superior Conference) with a 2-1 loss at Duluth East Tuesday evening.

The Spartans began a stretch of four games in five days with a 4-3 loss at Hermantown on Friday. After winning 8-1 Saturday at Menomonie, Superior fell to 0-2 in the Lake Superior Conference with an 8-1 loss at Cloquet Monday evening.

The Spartans fell behind early with East scoring both of its runs in the first inning on Chris Olson's single.

Superior scored its run in the fourth inning as Paul Edwards singled, moved to second on Jordan Hughes’ sac bunt, move to third on a wild pitch and scored on Grant Rindal’s ground out.

Spencer Severson pitched all seven innings for Superior, allowing six hits with three strikeouts and five walks.

Darrin Zwak and Asher Seering combined on a four-hitter for the Greyhounds

Also getting hits for Superior were Severson, Nik Mattson, Erick Anderson and Jordan McDonald. Anderson’s safety was his first varsity hit.

The Spartans host Eau Claire Memorial at 5 p.m. Thursday.

SPAWRTAN SPIN: The Spartan JV won 6-4. Colton Yepma pitched a complete game, giving up four runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out three. The Spartans were led at the plate by Logan Griffith and Jake Libal, who each had two hits and two RBIs.

’Jacks 8, Spartans 1

The visiting Spartans managed just three hits off Lumberjack pitcher Adam Hanson, a first-inning RBI single by Severson and singles by McDonald and Hughes.

Cloquet scored seven of its runs in the fourth inning.

Mattson and Dane Sislo pitched for Superior. Mattson pitched into the fourth inning, allowing four hits with two strikeouts, three walks and two earned runs.

Hanson pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts, while Kaleb Kadelbach had a hit, run and two RBIs to lead the Lumberjacks offensively

SPARTAN SPIN: The Spartan JV lost 12-5. Pete Guski Will Mullens, Jake Libal and Morgen Moen pitched for Superior. The Spartans had seven hits, two by Grant Hanson and one each by Tyler Lehikoinen, Sean O’Neill, Kyler Krob, Phil McCotter and Taavi Mattson.

Spartans 8, Mustangs 1

The Spartans improve to 3-0 against teams from the Big Rivers Conference with Saturday’s win at Menomonie.

Rindal improved to 3-0 with the victory. The junior allowed six hits with eight strikeouts.

Colton Yepma led the Spartans with two hits and two RBIs. Severson added two hits and an RBI, Sislo had an RBI hit and Edwards, Rindal, Mattson and Andy Glonek had a hit apiece.

Hermantown 4, Superior 3

Matt Lord’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning completed the Hermantown Hawks’ rally past the Spartans Friday evening in Hermantown.

Superior took a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning but couldn’t hang on as Hermantown scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning, then forced extra innings with a run in the seventh.

Trent Olson, who finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, led off the game with a double and scored on Severson’s two-out single.

The Spartans’ lead went to 3-0 in the sixth thanks to RBI singles by Glonek and Olson.

Spartan starting pitcher Ryan Myhre cruised through the first five innings, allowing only one hit with six strikeouts. After getting the first two outs in the sixth inning, Neil Pionk reached on an infield single and scored on Kevin Folman’s double. Mike Robertson then knocked home Folman with another single.

Hermantown tied the game up when Austin Klingsporn singled and scored on Lone LeGarde’s double.

After Superior stranded two runners on base in the top of the eighth inning, Hermantown won the game in the bottom of the inning when Pionk and Folman singled, Mike Robertson walked to load the bases and Lord ripped a single up the middle.

LeGarde picked up the win in relief of starting pitcher Folman. The two allowed 10 hits with eight strikeouts and five walks.

Jordan McDonald took the loss for Superior in relief of Myhre, who pitched the first seven innings.

Myhre allowed six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. He retired the side in order in three of the first five innings. He also and faced just four batters each in the other two innings before getting in trouble in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Spartans also got two hits each from Severson and Mattson and a hit apiece from Edwards, Rindal and Glonek.

Pionk and Folman had two hits apiece for the Hawks. Joe Muench, Robertson, Lord Klingsporn and LeGarde added a hit each for the Hawks, now 4-0 and 2-0.

SPARTAN SPIN: The Spartan JV lost 9-4. T. Mattson started on the mound for the Spartans and pitched three innings, allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out six. Hanson pitched three innings of relief, allowing five runs on four hits while striking out four. The Spartans got hits from Mattson, Krob, Sean O’Neill, Mullens and Nate Kunkel.
