Two Superior men will appear in Douglas County Circuit Court today for felony charges stemming from allegedly firing a handgun from the cab of a pickup truck on Barker’s Island Wednesday.
Matthew Kalvin Jaeckels, 20, faces one felony count of discharging a firearm from a vehicle towards a person. Joseph Daniel Madison, 20, faces one felony count of discharging a firearm from a vehicle towards a person-party to a crime and one misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer. The two men made their initial appearance in Douglas County Circuit Court Friday. Both were released after posting $10,000 cash bond with the conditions that they have no contact with the alleged victims and not possess any firearms. Additional conditions of no possession of any dangerous weapons and no use or possession of alcohol were applied to Jaeckel’s bond. A preliminary hearing for both men is scheduled for today.
According to the criminal complaint, Jaeckels fired a handgun at two people who were parked in the Barker’s Island parking lot Wednesday night. Superior Police reports indicate that at least one shot was fired from the cab of the pickup, driven by Madison. Both Madison and Jaeckels told officers that the warning shot was fired into the ground to scare away a man who was following them in a car that had been parked in the Barker’s Island parking lot.
According to Superior Police reports: Police responded to Barker’s Island at approximately 11 p.m. Wednesday night for a report of gunshots fired. A man and woman said they had their vehicles parked near the SS Meteor and the band shell, something they do many nights. They were talking when a red pickup truck pulled up, circled the lot and then sat for 15 minutes before leaving. The truck came back shortly after that, the two said, and the men inside asked what they were doing, then drove off. The man followed their truck to the Perkins parking lot to get their license plate number and returned to the Barker’s Island lot. The truck also came back, flashed its lights at them and circled the lot, the two said. When it was back on the road to leave the island, it slowed as it neared the bridge, then stopped and at least one gunshot was fired. The truck then drove away.
Superior Police officers caught up with the truck on the 400 block of Tower Avenue. There were four occupants in the vehicle, three men and one woman. A spent cartridge casing was found in the westbound lane of the road approximately 20 yards west of the bridge span. No additional casings or signs of bullet damage were found. A pistol was found in the cab of the truck.
A third man who was in the truck, 19-year-old Elijah Gold Record, faces one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia. After his arrest, a Superior Police officer found a pipe in Record’s pants pocket that had black residue in it which tested positive for the presence of marijuana, according to the criminal complaint.
