The Superior High School softball team fell to 1-1 on the season with a 5-4 loss to Duluth East Friday evening at Liebaert Field.
Alison Wainionpaa was the complete game loser, allowing eight hits with five strikeouts. Lindsay Kolquist picked up the win for the Greyhounds, allowing one hit with seven walks and four strikeouts.
Superior’s top hitters were Taylor Thompson and Kaitlyn Mergen, who each hit two-run doubles, and Kari Miller, who singled. Tailor Schuster also drew three walks.
After East scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, Schuster and Jessica Lindstrom walked in the fifth inning and both scored on Mergen’s double.
Kari Miller led off the seventh inning with a single and moved to second when Lindstrom walked. Both scored on Taylor Thompson’s two-out double. Harmony Clarke came in to pinch run for Thompson, but the inning ended with a strike out.
Sarah Buckner led East offensively, hitting two doubles and knocking in two runs. Jamie Whitlinger and Abby Paulseth also had two hits for the Greyhounds.
“Overall the girls played a great game,” SHS coach Amy Zembo said. “We hit the ball hard but couldn’t always find the gaps. Give credit to Duluth East, they have a strong top five hitting team.”
Superior is at Hermantown at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
SPARTAN SPIN: The SHS JV won 12-10. Shannon Johnstad was the winning pitcher with Kaitlin Heinen picking up the save. Sydney Johnson had three hits for the Spartans.
