Spartans win Barron Invite; Tigers fourth at Barron, first at Chetek

The Superior High School boys golf team took first place in the Barron Invitational Wednesday with a team score of 315.

Unity finished second with a 318, followed by Bruce, 323; and Northwestern and Hayward tied for fourth with 324s.

Individually for the Spartans, Daniel Burger carded a 77 for seventh place; Chris Rochon was eighth with a 78 and Blake Johnson’s 79 was good for 10th place. Nolan Holcombe also carded an 81 and Spencer Sitek withdrew because of the flu.

“We showed excellent course management which helped us limit any big numbers on individual holes,” SHS coach Dan Schulz said. “Our guys really bought in to par being a good score on any hole due to the windy conditions.

“I was also very pleased with the effort of all four guys. They displayed tremendous discipline and mental toughness in difficult conditions and on a day when they knew that their score was going to count because we were without our fifth varsity competitor.”

Reed Sorenson of Unity was the meet medalist with a 73. Northwestern’s Justin Alexson tied for second place with Bloomer’s Logan Price. Both golfers carded 74s.

Other Northwestern scores were Gabe Dinkel, 82; Josiah Vik and Peter Lindsay, 84s; and Brady Engstrom, 95.

The Tigers also picked up a pair of Heart O’ North Conference wins by defeating Spooner and Chetek on Thursday in Chetek.

The Tigers finished with a team score of 156, Chetek came in at 180 and Spooner had a 217.

Dinkel was the medalist with a 36. Lindsay was close behind with a 38, Grant Pearson fired a 40 and Vik had a 42.

The Spartans are back in action at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Chippewa Falls Invitational. The Tigers are at Barron at 4 p.m. Monday.
