Yellowjacket Union contractor earns honors for its construction

Immel Construction was recently honored with a prestigious “Build Wisconsin Award” presented by the Associated General Contractors of Wisconsin.

Immel Construction was recently honored with a prestigious “Build Wisconsin Award” presented by the Associated General Contractors of Wisconsin.

The award was presented to Immel for its work constructing the new Yellowjacket Student Union at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

The project, a new 84,600 square foot, $24.7 million, state-of-the-art student center to replace an outdated union, will serve the students, facility and the community.

“We’re very proud of this project and having it be recognized with an award from the AGC is truly an honor,” said Immel President Kelly Hafeman. “This award is a tribute to everyone involved in the project’s development and construction and I’m sure the students and faculty will enjoy the new facility for years to come.”

The new building features glue-laminated wood beams that support an 18,000 square foot vegetated roof over the curved roofline of the main activities space. Spaces within the Yellowjacket include campus dining, meeting and event space, an art gallery, and administrative offices. The project is pursuing a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification from the United States Green Building Council.

This is the second award Immel has received for this project. The firm has also received the “Top Project’s” award from The Daily Reporter. In addition, the Yellowjacket Union was also honored for Excellence in Sustainable Design in 2009 and Excellence in Architectural Design in 2010 by the State of Wisconsin Division of State Facilities.
