Ship runs aground in Lake Michigan; crew safe

MANISTEE, Mich. (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says a large ship ran aground in Lake Michigan near the shore off Manistee.

The Coast Guard says there were 17 people aboard the Invincible, 120 miles north of Grand Rapids. Petty Officer George Degener says they are safe and not at risk. The ship is not in danger of tipping over and will be guided across the lake to Sturgeon Bay, Wis.

The ship's grounding Saturday damaged a shaft in the engine room, causing it to take on water at a rate of two gallons per minute. The Coast Guard says virtually all the water has been pumped out. The ship has 49,000 gallons of diesel fuel but there's no sign of a leak.

The Invincible is described as a combination of tugboat and barge.
