The bats came alive Tuesday in Menomonie as the University of Wisconsin-Superior baseball team and UW-Stout combined for 42 runs and 57 hits in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Nelson Field.
The host Blue Devils won the opener 15-7 and the Yellowjackets salvaged the split with an 11-9 win in game two.
Catcher Jeff Miller had a double, home run and three RBIs in game two as Superior improved to 12-9 overall and 3-3 in the WIAC.
Miller finished the day with three hits and five RBIs for UWS while Wyatt Soderquist was 5-for-9 with three RBIs. Freshman T.J. Evanson added three hits, including his sixth home run of the season, and three RBIs in the opener.
Jon Schoch and Charlie Meyer had five hits apiece for Stout (13-9, 5-5). Two of Schoch’s hits were home runs in the opener.
Former Superior Spartan Mike Swanson (2-2) suffered the loss for the Yellowjackets in the opener.
Soderquist and Joe Ahrens each went 3-5 and Miller added his second home run of the season and three RBIs to pace the offense in Superior’s win in game two. Casey Dittel and Tom Fairbanks also had two hits apiece. Dittel, who also had two hits in the first game, had an RBI along with Tony Remund in game two..
The Yellowjackets opened up a 7-0 lead in the sixth inning, but the Blue Devils rallied, scoring five times in the bottom of the ninth and getting the winning run to the plate. UWS senior Nick Bursik put out the fire, recording the final out to get the save.
Ethan Branum got the win to improve to 3-1 on the year. Branum allowed four runs with seven strikeouts and three walks before giving way to Cody Johnson in the eighth inning. Johnson allowed five runs on five hits while recording just two outs. Bobby Tyndall got the ’Jackets out of the inning, setting up Bursik’s save in the ninth inning.
The Yellowjackets will play doubleheaders at noon Saturday and Sunday at UW-Stevens Point. Their first home games of the season will be on April 21 and 22 when they host UW-Platteville for doubleheaders each day.
