LETTER: Phony candidates mislead voters

To the Telegram: In Wisconsin, we have a tradition of open and honest government. Running fake candidates in Democratic primaries makes a mockery of that tradition, and undermines our reputation for good government.

In Wisconsin, we have a tradition of open and honest government. Running fake candidates in Democratic primaries makes a mockery of that tradition, and undermines our reputation for good government.

Running fake candidates is not only dishonest, it is likely illegal. It’s a violation of Wisconsin state law to misrepresent yourself on your candidacy paperwork. By declaring they would represent the Democratic party while actually representing the interests of the Republican party, legal observers believe that fake candidates are committing a Class I felony.

We’ve been down this road before. When the GOP ran fake candidates last summer, it cost taxpayers over $400,000 and these are the same people who complain about the cost of recalls.

It’s beyond hypocritical for them to complain about the cost of elections that hundreds of thousands of people have asked for and then force us to pick up the tab on these fake candidates. This faking must be stopped now.
