The Superior High School boys golf team finished fourth in Monday’s Hudson Invitational, which was played under windy conditions and temperatures in the mid-40s at the Troy Burne Golf Club.
Tartan (Minn.) won the team title with a score of 333. River Falls was second at 343, Woodbury (Minn.) was third at 350, and Superior finished with a 351.
“I was pleased with our effort, especially considering the difficult conditions because the strong winds,” SHS coach Dan Schulz said. “It was a nice experience for all the players to compete on such an elite golf course. Troy Burne is undoubtedly one of the best courses in Wisconsin, but with the absence of trees (and with high winds) it certainly wasn’t going to yield any low scores.”
Superior was led individually by Chris Rochon, who finished tied for second place among Division 1 schools with an 82. Also carding an 82 was Tartan’s Danny Theilman. Garret Loomis of River Falls finished first with a 76.
Other Spartan scores were Spencer Sitek, 86; Daniel Burger, 88; Nolan Holcombe, 95; and Blake Johnson, 100.
“Chris Rochon picked up where he left off last year by carding an excellent score of 82, despite a triple bogey 7 on his finishing hole,” Schulz said. “He finished second overall in a competitive field of 110 golfers.
“Spencer and Daniel both got off to a rough start but showed a lot of mental toughness and battled the entire day to card 86 and 88 respectively.”
Superior returns to action April 18 at the Barron Invitational.
