Tiger softball team wins opener

The Northwestern Tigers softball team opened its season with an 11-5 win over the Proctor Rails Thursday evening at the Brule softball field.

The Rails jumped on the Tigers with an early 3-0 lead.

Alex Friend started Northwestern’s comeback with a three-run triple in the bottom of the third inning.

Shelby Schultz was the complete-game winner for the Tigers, allowing seven hits with seven strikeouts and six walks. Steph Torgeson suffered the loss for Proctor.

“First her first time on the mound this spring, Shelby did a good job,” NHS coach Scott Janigo said.

The Tigers also got two hits and two RBIs from C.J. Kahl, two hits and two runs scored from Sarah Miller and a hit each from Madeline Spangenberg, Alie Larson, Haley Aller and Karaline Green.

Melendie Nelson and Beth Spices had two hits each for Proctor.

The Tigers are back in action at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Rice Lake. They will then host Ashland and Hurley at 10 a.m. on April 14.
