Few new members could join county board

Two new supervisors could join the Douglas County Board after the elections are certified next week, according to County Clerk Susan Sandvick.

While no one ran for the seats in the 1st and 11th Districts, write-in votes may have decided the next representatives of those districts.

In the 1st District, Sam Pomush received three write in votes and Marvin Finendale of the 11th District received six votes.

Another write-in candidate, James Nicholson, took at least 23 of 86 write-in votes cast in the 19th District county board race.

Sandvick said she had questions concerning the write-in tally sheet that would be clarified before the canvass board meets Tuesday.

Still, Robert Mock, the only candidate on the ballot in the 19th District, carried the vote by a 2-1 margin.

Mock, Pomush and Finendale would be the only new members of the board after incumbents Nick Baker, Larry Quam and Pat Ryan held off challenges from Ed Gallagher, Phil Baker and Jay Kinney, respectively.

In races that put incumbents against incumbents, Supervisors Kathy Schulties, Alan Jaques and Keith Allen were returned to the board.

Incumbents Charlie Glazman, Jack Sweeney and Kay McKenzie lost their bids for re-election.

When it came to Douglas County’s preference for president, Democratic President Barack Obama soundly defeated all Republican challengers, carrying nearly 900 more votes than Republican front-runner, Rick Santorum.

About 57 percent of the votes cast Tuesday in the presidential preference were cast for Republican candidates.

None of the election results are final until the boards of canvassers for the various voting districts meet Tuesday.
