Spartan baseball team sweeps Eau Claire North

The Superior High School baseball team pulled off a sweep of the defending state champion Eau Claire North Huskies 1-0 and 6-0 Thursday evening at Carson Park in Eau Claire.

The Superior High School baseball team pulled off a sweep of the defending state champion Eau Claire North Huskies 1-0 and 6-0 Thursday evening at Carson Park in Eau Claire.

The Spartans used dominating pitching to defeat the Huskies, who are ranked No. 4 and No. 8 in two different Wisconsin preseason baseball polls.

Ryan Myhre won the opening game, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings.

Grant Rindal came on to retire the Huskies in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up the save. Rindal struck out two batters and Superior centerfield Paul Edwards made a nice running catch on a well-hit ball hit to the left-centerfield gap.

Rindal continued into the second game, pitching no-hit ball through six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts and two walks. Jordan McDonald walked a batter and struck out another in the seventh inning to complete the no-hitter.

“What a great way to start the season, and beating a tough team will help build our confidence as we go forward,” SHS coach Don Dembroski said. “It’s a credit to Ryan and Grant and all the work they did in the off season. Pitchers usually start out slow at the beginning of the season, but because of their work, they had pretty good stamina and were able to go deep into both games.”

The Spartans’ lone run in the opening game came in the top of the seventh inning when Dane Sislo scored on Andy Glonek’s sac fly to center field.

Rindal had two of the Spartans’ four hits. Jordan Hughes also singled.

Ryan Connor was the losing pitcher for North in relief of Dominic Berlin, who pitched the first five innings.

Superior threatened to break a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning, but Jordan McDonald was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on Hughes’ single to center.

Sislo started Superior’s rally by walking to lead off the seventh inning. He moved to third when Hughes reached on an error while attempting to bunt. Sislo then scored on Glonek’s sac fly.

North's only hits were a single by Andrew Fischer in the fourth and a double by Berlin in the sixth of the first game.

The Spartans had four hits in the second game, a two-run double by Rindal and hits by Trent Olson, Nik Mattson and Edwards. Spencer Severson also knocked in a run with a sac fly. Superior’s other three runs were unearned.

Superior is at Spooner at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

SPARTAN SPIN: In 12 seasons at SHS, Dembroski had never defeated a team from Eau Claire. Now he has a three-game winning streak. Superior also defeated Eau Claire Memorial in a playoff game last season. “We went from never beating an Eau Claire team to now winning three in a row,” Dembroski said. “North graduated a lot of guys and you could tell they were a young team. But they have a great tradition there and you know they’ll only get better as the season goes on.” … The Spartans host the ECM Old Abes on April 17. ... The SHS JV lost 26-9 and 4-3 Thursday nigth at ECN.
